A friend recently cautioned members of a family who were taking offense at a word or a figure of speech in their exchanges. That was good advice and its especially tragic when such uncharitable and outright nasty conversation takes place within a family. It is, however, something that pervades our society, often fed by the example of commentators and professional political opinion makers, who, when called to account for their inflammatory rhetoric, hide behind the 'entertainer' label. Our conversations, as a people, have devolved to verbal grenades thrown over transoms, from which nothing emerges but obscuring smoke, choking dust and shards of once useful structures of social discourse and relationship. Its time we labelled those who have promulgated and taught this kind of vitriol as the Enemies of the Good that our ancestors created the American Republic to establish.
